What We Do

In SA 60 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. Such a thing is almost unimaginable to most of us. At Little Heroes Foundation we accept that cancer, like all life threatening illness, is a way of life for many families. The stress the emotion and the sense of bewilderment leaves them feeling isolated and concerned about the next steps they should take, and where to turn to for help.

Children are the inspiration behind Little Heroes Foundation  and as a result we are constantly considering projects towards which we are able to direct our funding. Sporting champions are the driving force behind our fundraising activities; working tirelessly to provide time, signature memorabilia and personal appearances for each and every fundraising event on our calendar.

Our funding programs are directed primarily to urgently needed medical facilities and treatment equipment, and 'Life After Diagnosis' child and family support programs relative to childhood cancer and serious illness.

As we approach our fifteenth anniversary, we have contributed over $12 million dollars to the Women's & Children's Hospital and other funding programs to make a genuine and enduring contribution to a more fulfilling life for children living with cancer and serious illness.

Our latest fundraising efforts have been focused primarily on allocating $2 million towards the establishment of a new single point of service centre - Haematology & Oncology Centre - and $1 million towards a new MRI unit at the Women's & Children's Hospital. But our support for the children goes further than that; because cancer diagnosis for a child lasts a lifetime and is an emotionally stressful experience leaving the family feeling isolated, bewildered and concerned about the next steps they should take.

Today most children are successfully treated for cancer; childhood cancer survival rates have increased dramatically, from 25% in the late 1960s, to approximately 75% in 2009; however the treatment can cause side effects known as late effects that occur months, or even years, after treatment is completed.

Late effects can occur almost anywhere in the body and include physical problems such as heart and lung problems, an emotional and cognitive (memory, thinking, and attention) problems, such as anxiety, depression, and learning disorders.

So because childhood cancer survivors are living longer, their long-term health and late effect therapies have become a focus of specialist survivorship services. That's why we launched our Child and Family Support programs.

Our Vision is for diagnosed children to rediscover and enjoy their irrepressible enthusiasm for life. Our Mission is to identify and support funding projects; provide information and advice; recommend service providers; advocate for individual needs; partner other children's charities; so that every critically ill child is treated with utmost respect and provided with the very best care.
